Sagittarius is a centaur, half man and half horse. He is Chiron, son of Saturn. He was a master of the healing arts and gifted in hunting, music, and prophecy. He taught many famous mythological people, including Castor and Pollux, Hercules and Jason.

Hercules accidently struck Chiron with a poison spear while hunting. Chiron, being immortal, could not die, but suffered the pangs of death and would continue doing so if he could not find death.

Hercules came upon Prometheus, who stole fire from heaven and incurred the anger of Jupiter, who chained him to a rock where an eagle ripped at his liver. He was to remain there till someone, of his free will, would take his place.

Chiron took his place, Prometheus was freed and Chiron was allowed to die.

Jupiter placed the noble Chiron in the heavens, as Sagittarius, the bright constellation in the winter sky.
